Over the last few years, Facebook and other social media platforms have made strides towards becoming effective digital marketing and advertising venues, rivaling that of even Google Adwords. If I had to guess, I would be willing to bet this was one of the biggest deciding factors when Twitter ultimately decided to pull the trigger on 280 characters. The GoodĢ80 characters makes Twitter a more attractive advertising platform – Now that we’ve had a couple weeks for the dust to settle, let’s make a rational breakdown of the good and bad that 280 character Twitter presents. Like every large-scale change, there are pros and cons. Did you really expect anything different?Īs for me, I still don’t really know which side of the fence I sit on quite yet. Even more took to Twitter and used all 280 newfound characters to rip Twitter a new you-know-what. But that’s social media for you. Some users and critics applauded the new feature. Radical change on the Internet, of course, brought out a flurry of heated opinions. As you may know, since Twitter’s launch in 2006, users had been restricted to 140 characters. That being said, Twitter actually did break the Internet as we know it in early November when it rolled out a new function for users, giving them the ability to use 280 characters per tweet. I’ve seen too many Buzzfeed articles with headlines like “This puppy is SO cute it LITERALLY broke the Internet!” or “Paris Hilton sent one little tweet and proceeded to LITERALLY break the Internet!” I’m sure Twitter considered this change carefully, but I’m convinced they’ve made a terrible mistake.The term “breaking the Internet” is, in my opinion, thrown around way too loosely. The fewer tweets that fit in a single screen at a time, the less fun Twitter feels.
That’s why email feels like a dreary chore, and Twitter feels like fun. Given unlimited characters, such as in email, people ramble aimlessly. Given 280 characters, people are going to use them, even to express thoughts that could have fit in 140. Fitting certain complex thoughts into a mere 140 characters sometimes felt like solving a small challenge, like one of The New York Times’s tiny little 5 × 5 crossword puzzles.īut perhaps the best commentary comes from William Shakespeare: I agree with Ihnatko - the 140-character limit made it a challenge. It’s no surprise that writers, in particular, object to this change. I like the word-Tetris of making a complete thought fit in a Twitter trying to be more like Facebook is like basketball trying to be more like football - a bad idea that won’t work. Twitter timelines now look more like Facebook - but Facebook is already there for Facebook-like timelines. But one of the pros is it made Twitter unique. Yes, there were many trade-offs with the 140-character limit, both pros and cons. By doubling the character limit, Twitter has eliminated what made them unique.
